Last week I forgot to do my Suggested Six list for LJ Idol entries. But, I return this week, with some entries that I have enjoyed and hope that my friends will enjoy, too. Of course, I encourge you to check out other entries as well, because this is by no means an exhaustive list of what was good this week.
java_fiend (poll #4, Tribe littlebit1988),
entry:
"Just as I’ve seen the faces of those who are again claiming “victory” as if this were some sort of game. And every time I see those smug, smiling faces, I’m filled with the same sadness, the same disgust and the same rage." This is an excerpt from an entry written about the recently repealed Marriage Equality act in Maine, and more broadly about the fight for equal rights for all people, regardless of sexuality and gender identity. It's always heartening to read another argument in favor, to know that there is strong support out there.
callistahogan (poll #3, Tribe lady_hoshi),
entry:
"He thought the results would turn out exactly as they did -- and I felt an even twistier feeling in my gut when he said that. I just nodded and didn't say a thing, although I almost wanted to." Another entry on the Marriage Equality topic. This time a more introspective piece written by someone who just a short while ago sat on the other side of the fence. Thoughtful and well-written, it's encouraging to see someone who came to recognize that civil rights are deserved by all.
sherriola (poll #6, Tribe talonkarrde88),
entry:
"I use a screen reader, and it doesn’t read a colon and a closed parenthesis as a smile face! So, it might say, blah, blah, blah, colon closed paren. What? Ok, I’m confused, what on earth does that mean?" A post that points out the failure of emoticons to translate to the blind community. It's an accessability issue that I hadn't considered much before joining Idol, but one that I'm mindful of now.
zia_narratora (poll #6, Tribe talonkarrde88),
entry: You've probably heard me mention my friend Tea quite a lot on my journal, if you're not actually friends with her yourself. Anyway, she's awesome. And she has been doing her journal entries in the form of comics. This week's is about how she was mistaken for Shirley Temple in first grade. But, actually, you should check out all of her comics. They're awesome.
mstrobel (poll #3, Tribe lady_hoshi),
entry:
"Then she’d soar upwards again, and then without warning she would suddenly collapse into another all-consuming slump. That was Luce. The happiest girl in the world, yet also the saddest." Actually, I had meant to recommend last week's post--but this one is equally evocative and beautiful. mstrobel is a talented storyteller with a knack for language. This is a tale of friendship and comfort and sheep pastures.
hug_machine (poll #2, Tribe bigdoug),
entry: This is the story of Cat's first smile pile. And the story of the one she has now. But it's also about her mission to make you smile as well. Cat has got to be the most adorable person I've met, and she sure does live up to her moniker. So, if you've been feeling a little down, a little blue, or if you just want another excuse to smile, pop on over. She wants to help you start your very own smile pile!
My own entry for this week is
OVER HERE!
Now, with voting this week, things are a bit different. Only members of the community may vote. However, that's easy enough to remedy. Just
join the community. If you don't want the posts to show up on your friends list, make sure that the box asking if you want to also watch the community is not checked. Then, pop on by
the voting post and cast your ballots! I am in the fourth poll, Tribe littlebit1988. Voting is open until Tuesday at 7:30pm EST.
Thanks to those of you who have been reading and offering your encouragement! I'm really glad to have supportive friends.
